James spoke today on the collapse of
Easter Island. In the space of four years many of the statues had been
deliberately broken and over the following years every single Moai was
broken. Some believe that the people had
used up their resources and intertribal fighting began because of the lack of
food. Breaking a rival tribe’s Moai
would be like toppling the statue of Saddam Husein when the Americans invaded
Iraq. Others think that the people
themselves just became frustrated with their gods. They had spent their lives making statues for
the gods but the gods were not doing anything to help them.
The seas are calmer today so there are
more people out around the ship. We were
invited to another cocktail party by the Captain. By way of starting a conversation I said to
the people on our left and our right that we had won the champagne on the second
leg of the journey and that the people sitting next to us had won it on the
third leg of our trip, so they could expect to win tonight. Lo and behold, the man sitting next to me won
the champagne on this fourth leg. He was
flabbergasted. I think he thought I had
some inside knowledge. Just a bit of
fun.
Tonight we had a tango revue by Denysa
Ferreira and Victor Mongelos. It gave
the history of Tango and they performed the different styles that have evolved
over time.
A disappointing loss by the Dees!
